We can make a guess that quilts remind Cassie of her parents, and her family's heritage. The quilt is rectangular, and the rows of quilted fabric inside the quilt form rectangular frames. Rows of buildings in the background repeat the shape, but on Tar Beach there are many circles and round shapes. The heads, basket, watermelon, and bottles are round. The long curving line of the bridge is rounded, and the repeated dots of stars Tar Beach 2 is what Faith Ringgold refers to as a story quilt. Inspired by African and African American storytelling traditions, the work combines narrative imagery with written text that gives permanence to what might be considered the oral component of the story.

This quilt tells the story of Cassie Louise Lightfoot, the protagonist in Ringgold’s children’s book, Tar Beach. Several parts of the story are included in the picture. In the foreground, Cassie’s parents play cards with their friends on the tar roof (“tar beach”) of their apartment building in New York City. Illustrations are in full color. "Ringgold recounts the dream adventure of eight-year-old Cassie Louise Lightfoot, who flies above her apartment-building rooftop, the 'tar beach' of the title, looking down on 1939 Harlem. Part autobiographical, part fictional, this allegorical tale sparkles with symbolic and historical references central to African-American culture.
